Surgical Tables are medical devices used to perform various types of surgical procedures. From General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Oral Surgery, Plastic Surgery and others. These tables are often also referred as surgery tables, surgical beds, or operating tables and are intended for use by a wide array of Surgeons. Depending upon the specialty dictates the type of table used for the surgical procedure.

All Surgical Tables or Operating Tables have several common capabilities. The tables can elevate and descend, tilt side to side, tilt up/tilt down, adjustable back section, adjustable foot section, jackknife and reverse jackknife positioning. More advanced units have longitudinal shift allowing the table to move on a plane head to toe and most commonly used during procedures requiring the use of a C-Arm for imaging during spinal surgery or various Orthopedic Surgeries.

Surgical tables originally were manually operated units powered by one of the surgical team’s staff member. Today’s surgical tables are motorized and controlled through a hand pendant or foot control. Older units were all steel with stainless steel surfaces. Currently most tables have radiolucent patient surfaces to assist in the use of imaging equipment like X-Ray units and C-Arms.
