Electrocardiograms (EKG / ECG) units perform a recording of the electrical activity of the heart. Abbreviated ECG or EKG are used interchangeably depending upon clinician. An electrocardiogram is used to monitor your heart. Each beat of your heart is triggered by an electrical impulse normally generated from special cells in the upper right chamber of your heart

An EKG is a noninvasive, simple procedure. Electrodes are placed on the skin of the chest and connected in a specific order to a unit that, when turned on the unit will measure electrical activity of the 12 angles of the heart and provide a printed recording of the heart’s signals and in newer EKG units often a visual display of the heart’s activity, either on the EKG unit itself or a computer screen. The first diagnosis of heart attack or (MI) is usually made through the observation of a combination of clinical symptoms and characteristic EKG / ECG changes. If a medication is known to sometimes adversely affect heart function, a baseline ECG may be ordered before the patient starts taking the medicine, and follow-up testing may occur at regular intervals to look for any changes.
