An EKG is a noninvasive, simple procedure. Electrodes are placed on the skin of the chest and connected in a specific order to a unit that, when turned on the unit will measure electrical activity of the 12 angles of the heart and provide a printed recording of the heart’s signals and in newer EKG units often a visual display of the heart’s activity, either on the EKG unit itself or a computer screen. The first diagnosis of heart attack or (MI) is usually made through the observation of a combination of clinical symptoms and characteristic EKG / ECG changes. An ECG can detect areas of muscle deprived of oxygen and/or dead tissue in the heart. If a medication is known to sometimes adversely affect heart function, a baseline ECG may be ordered before the patient starts taking the medicine, and follow-up testing may occur at regular intervals to look for any changes.
